I've traced my ancestory, as my direct ancestory said we were from Birmingham, England then hit a wall...they disappeared. But then I thought....hmm....they might have worked in Birmingham, but they were from elsewhere originally...Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England...looking in a different direction...then they were shipped off to South Africa...one of the children returned to England, then sailed to Canada, and then I have the tree from there.

I have not had time to go through your Site thoroughly but was pleased to see that Robert Dickason is listed as the 1820 Settler of whom I am a Descendant. I do, in fact, have a 'soft copy' of a Family Tree that was drawn up some 45 Years ago, please contact me if you wish to have any further Information.

I am trying to find my great, great grandfather's details as an emigrant from Scotland to South Africa. My research so far indicates that he and his family could have been part of the "Aided Emigration to South Africa" around 1859. I believe that they may have arrived on the "S.S. The Bride." Would you have these passenger lists?
He was Robert Brown and his wife was Margaret. They had 2 or 3 children with them. He was a blacksmith and died within 2 years of arrival.
Regards

Hi Paul

This is a fantastic site - there is a branch of my family who were 1820 Settlers and this fills a lot of gaps. I'm descended from Dr William Carey - first baptist missionary to go to India in 1793.
One of his sisters, Ann Carey, married a Hobson and it was 2 of their sons, David and William who were Settlers.

Just come across this site - excellent, I believe John Dudley who was with Sarah and their daughters is my 4 x Great Grandfather originally from Birmingham. (Gardner Party 1820 Ship: Sir George Osborn). Hoping now to research further. Sarah (I believe her maiden name was Clowes) was John's 2nd wife. Now looking forward to a whole load of new research...I have further details on John's other children.

I am looking for my grandmothers' grandparents. I have no info but that their surname was Smith and that she (my gran)was born in Cradock 1913. Her father was Ferdinand Smith and her mother was Maria Hendrina Alberta Erasmus. I am wondering if they were descendants of the British Settlers as their surname was Smith, not Smit and that they originated from the Eastern Cape. Hope someone out there could help me? Thank you.
