Notes |
- He ran a transport business until the advent of the railways when wagon transport became obsolete. From then onwards he and Emma, his wife, entered the hotel business which they conducted successfully for the rest of their lives.
After a stint at Howiesons Poort they bought what was then “Styles Hotel” in Port Alfred in 1897, and changed the name to “The Grand Hotel”. By 1900 they had added new wings, verandahs and a dining hall. In 1907 acetylene gas was used to light the hotel.
Visitors arrived by train and came from all over South Africa. Among the illustrious visitors were the Hon. Victor Sampson, Attorney General; Mr Lardner-Burke, Solicitor General; Rt. Hon. Dr L. S. Jameson, and the Hon. E. H. Walton.
Bill and Emma eventually retired in Port Alfred where they both died in 1927. They are buried at the West Bank Cemetery. {Chronicles 31 Aug 2015 }
