Notes |
- He went to school in Ficksburg and later matriculated in 1961 at the Tweespruit Acricultural School. In 1963 to 1966 he completed his N3 In Motor Mechanics at the Technical College in Johannesburg.
During this period he also joined the South African Medical Corps in the South African Defence Force as a Medic at No 2 Military Hospital in Wynberg.
On his Citizen Force Discharge Certificate it states the following dated 02/04/1966: "Date of Posting to Citizen Force 2/4/1962. Height 6'1", Complexion : Fair, Colour of Eyes: Brown, Colour of Hair: Dark Brown" It seems that he did his Military Service and his N3 and Trade Test as a Motor Mechanic at the same time. During this time he was also a Medic during the Sharpville uprising.
He started working at Leyland Motor Corporation in Bloemfontein where his Father, Horace was also employed in 1963 until 1972. In 1972 until 1993 he was employed by Shell S.A. firstly as a Diesel Mechanic in Bloemfontein, Kimberley and Johannesburg. He got transfered back to Bloemfontein in 1987 as Fleet Manager for the Orange Free State, Northern Cape and Lesotho. In 1993 he received a Certificate for 20 years service. In 1993 he also left the Company due to retrenchment. As a Motor Mechanic he qualified in Magirus-Deutz in 1973, M.A.N Truck and Bus in 1983 and Mercedes-Benz in 1988 and also did a Advanced Driving Course through The Institute of Advanced Motorists of South Africa. In 1984 he was resident at 11 Boerbok Road, Brackenhurst, Alberton.
On a more personel note my mother and father were still like two love birds when she died in 1991. He looked after my mother when she fell ill due to Diabetes two years before her death and worked his job, mostly on the road travelling from Depot to Depot of Shell to check on his Fleet and still come home and cook and run the household as I was out of the house by then and Chavonne my sister was studying in Wellington. He lived with me the last 18 months. He was the type of person that if you asked to repair anything he would sit and fiddle with it for a few minutes and fix it, hence the nickname "Mr. Fixit".(DWA)
