- Christening extracted: "Robert Restall, son of John & Mary, Mansel Street" (G.S.94,695). A will signed at the time he and his wife were married [1843] indicates his birthplace was Stratford Green, Essex, England. He is mentioned in his father's will, written 6 Nov 1837, as "my son, Robert Restall, now or lately residing at the Cape of Good Hope...." The name "R. Restall" is listed in a transcript of settlers in the book, "The Story of the British Settlers of 1820 in South Africa" by Harold Hockly, his party is listed as "Independent", and the ship on which he arrived, "Duke of Marlborough" (http://www.genealogy.co.za/hockly.html). The foregoing confirmed by "Roll of the British settlers in South Africa, pt. 1, to 1826", E. Morse Jones, A.A. Balkema, pub., Cape Town, 1969, wherein the name of Robert Restall appears, p.55, among those who landed in 1820 as a part of the Daniell's [party] on the ship, "Duke of Marlborough". The Daniells party is described on p.9 as "A party of 40 from Devonshire led by Lieutenant Richard Daniell, R.N., sailed in the "Duke of Marlborough". 1820 Settlers.com says the "Marlborough" sailed 30 March 1820 from Portsmouth, and its landfall date was 18 June 1820. They were located on the Buffels Kloof stream, the location being named Sidbury" (G.S.990,176). Further, the same source, p. 73, confirms the ship, "Duke of Marlborough", departed Portsmouth March of 1820 and lists June of 1820 as its month of arrival in Table, Simon's and Algoa Bays. Robert's Death Notice, filed 31 Dec 1875, gives his name; birthplace, Devonshire, England [incorrect]; no parents names shown; age at death, 77; widower; date of death November 2, 1875; place of death, "Own House, Uitenhage"; gives the first names of his six children, indicates only the youngest was a minor [under 21] at that time; property left, "Moveable Only"; signed by his married daughter, Cornelia Macdonald. Will indexes, Cape Province South Africa (1874-1912)" contains the entry in 1875, "Restall, Robert Vol. 230, p.64" (G.S.1,295,278); copy of will written 16 Mar 1874 and filed 31 Dec 1875, states he is of Uitenhage; names Henry Nathall Chase of Uitenhage, William Simon Gregorius Meterlerkamp [sic-wife's brother] of Zuurbron, District of Hamamdorp [sic], and Donald McDonald [sic] of Port Elizabeth [daughter Cornelia's husband] as executors. Burial information from internet lookup, Uitenhage Jubilee Park Cemetery records: Anglican Plot No. 22 152
There is a Restall Street in Uitenhage--must have run through the Restall farm at some time.
Letter from Robert's sister Lucy Restall's son, William Alfred Iles, dated 11 Mar 1875, states his mother had a brother named Robert who was "very comfortably off", and had eight children; another note in family records indicates Robert had two daughters, Maria and Charlotte [the latter incorrect---probably Cornelia].
