Apologies for not being more specific, but newspaper not mentioned.
Mrs. Vivienne HARVEY, a resident of the Mary Potter Wing of St. Joseph's
Hospital, celebrates her 100th birthday today. She is possibly the first
white woman to settle in 1911 in what was then Northern Rhodesia.
Born in Smithfield on Oct 10, 1879, the former Miss WALLACE married Mr.
Walter HARVEY in Stutterheim in 1901. The South African War was then in
progress and by the time they went farming in Zambia, the couple had three
young daughters.
It was in 1939 that Mr. HARVEY died and since then his widow divided her
time between her three daughters until she became bedridden.
Her daughters are Mrs. Jessie REYNOLDS of Port Alfred, Mrs. Alice EARL-SPURR
of Salisbury and Mrs. Vivienne HOOPER of Port Elizabeth. Her six
grandchildren are Mr. Graydon CLAYTON who farms near Grahamstown. Mrs.
Charmaine GARTON of Port Elizabeth, twins Peter and John CLAYTON of
Johannesburg and Salisbury, Dr. Miles BOWKER of Woodridge and Mrs. Rosemary
KAPLAN of Johannesburg.
Of her 12 great grandchildren the best known is probably Miss Dianne KOHLER
of Durban who works in the SABC's news section. She is frequently heard and
seen as an interviewer.
