WILMOT Laurence Aubrey, Colonel, SAAF No. P102596V. Laurie WILMOT was born n 31 May 1914 and was educated in Pretoria. He joined the South African Permanent Force serving in the SAAF in which he was a Captain with 2 Squadron by 1939. When 3 SAAF Squadron was formed late in 1940 he took command of this unit, but moved to 1 SAAF Squadron in June of that year, leading the squadron during the fighting over Eritrea. Here on 23 February 1941 he was shot down by a CR32 flown by Sottotton Alberto Veronese of 410a Squadriglia CT, crash-landing his Hurricane and becoming a prisoner. Veronese was at once shot down and wounded by Lieutenant A DUNCAN, WILMOT's wingman. WILMOT was released on 6 April as Eritrea fell to the Empire forces, and returned to command 1 SAAF Squadron on 20 June, now based in Egypt. In November he was posted to command 2 SAAF Squadron, doubling as 'sweep leader' of 258 Wing, of which the unit formed a part, subsequently undertaking the same role for 262 Wing. On 16 November 1941 he force-landed his Tomahawk in the Desert, spending two nights there before he was picked up. The award of an immediate DFC followed on 11 December. Rested from opertions, he returned to the Union to serve at Air Force HQ, Pretoria, during 1942, and the became o/c, Fortress Air Defences from January to Jun 1943. Posted in Tunisia, he commanded 322 Wing from August to October 1943, and then 239 Wing until August 1944, receiving a DSO that month. He remained in the SAAF postwar, commanding 7 Wing from July 1946, but on 26 June 1947 was killed in a crash at Waterkloof in a 60 Squadron Mosquito.
