Notes |
- My Mother was very special and we were a close family. Mom was always
very generous and enjoyed having folk arround to our home. She never was
great on going visiting a great deal, but she did love people. After Dad
retired they moved back to Queenstown to see whether they would like to
return there. Sadly after only three months my Father passed away
suddenly. Mom was staying in my brothers house at the time and although
she and Dad had considered buying it, after Dad was gone Mom felt she
could not live alone in a house. We were able to get a flat for her at
Waverley Court where she lived for more than twenty years. After her
sister, Aunt Jenny passed away Mom soon felt it was time to move on
again. For fifty years she had Lily Duda working for her. A more talented
lady you could not find. In the last few years at the flat, Lily lived in
Mom's spare room. I knew I could depend on her to let me know if there
were any problems. Mom began to feel that it was time Lily was able to
retire, and so she decided to move to my brothers home where there was a
flat attached to the house. This did not work out as Mom found it too
quiet so on her instructions I made arrangements for her to move to the
Barkly East Service Centre. This was a very good move and Mom was most
happy. She had lots of friends and her flat was ideally suited, it was at
the end where she could see everyone who passed, besides those who walked
in the street. Mom took ill suddenly and we had to take to East London
where the specialist found she had cancer in the bowe. After a major
operation Mom mada a miraculous recovery. The specialist felt she should
remain near good medical help so we were able to arrange comfortable
accommodation for her at the Lily Kirshman Home. Although she made
friends and was happy as my brother was able to visit her daily, she
longed to return to Barkly. She felt for one thing she was paying an arm
and a leg for not any different accommodation. She missed her old friends
too. At the time my Ralph was very ill so I would not have been able to
visit as I had previously, so she was better off where she was. When she
took ill at the end of her life I did not feel that she was given the
treatment or help that she should have been. I am only glad that I and
others of the family could be there for her and see to her needs.l My
beloved Mother died in East London at the Lily Kirshman Home and was
buried as was her dearest desire with her beloved Robbie in Queenstown.
This was a promise I made to her. What a wonderful life of 93yrs and the
Lord graciously kept her mind sound and her body well right to the end.
She was a fine Christian example to all her family, children, we were
four, grandchildren there were12 and great grandchildren there were10. A
great sorrow to Mom was the untimely passing of our only daughter from
cancer and then the tragic death of my sisters son. A life truely lived
for the Lord.
