Notes |
- Olive and Tom were brought up Methodists (Wesleyans) but in 1918 they all became Anglicans.
Jessie adored son tom and ignored Olive and as a result was born an animosity between brother and sister that never healed.
Eliza Ann helped Olive by having her in Port Elizabeth during school and college holidays. For the rest of her life Olive was to recall those holidays as happy. - but she always had to return home. She trained to become a teacher and escaped to the Transkei where she met Louis de Souza - a Catholic - in Willowvale.
When Olive announced they were to wed Jessie told Olive to think it over - but it must be her decision. Olive decided to go ahead. They were wed in the Catholic Church, Grahamstown. They honeymooned in Cape Town where they bought furniture for their Butterworth house. On the day of their return Louis picked up the mail and discovered he was being transferred to Pretoria where they remained until September 1929, when he again transferred to Barberton where he remained for the rest of his life - with the help of the then Forestry Minister, Denys Reitz an old friend of the De Souza’s. Olive was welcomed into the De Souza/Taylor clan. She became fond of her mother-in-law, Marie de Souza (nee Taylor), the English widow of Louis F de Souza, the Secretary of State for War and acting Commandant General of the South African Republic (Transvaal).
