Notes |
- Dorothea Rowse writes in October 2017:"
1. After a very long search for Alfred King I have reached the firm conclusion that he was actually Alfred Brint, the illegitimate son of Marth Brint, the sister of Thomas Brint/Brent.
2. Thomas Brent, a 1st cousin to the three King brothers, had a sister Martha (Brint) and she was the mother of two illegitimate children Alfred, born 5.1.1809, bap Cam 9.2.1812 and Sarah, bap Cam 21.4.1805. Thomas and his sister had been indentured to Elisha King, a broadloom weaver, prior to embarkation.
3. He is the child Alfred Brent who appears incorrectly on many Brent family trees as a son of Thomas and Grace Brent. He is assumed to have been born in 1820 since he was not on the disembarkation list.
4. When Thomas Brent, his uncle, died (1836) the DN was completed in 1847 by his widow Grace. She did not include Alfred in the list of children. – Thomas Brent 34; Sarah Brent 32, Hannah Brent 25, Sarah Brent (sic) ie Elizabeth 23, John Brent 22, Mary Brent 21. He was also not included in Grace Brent’s DN in 1880.
5. In Smith’s List (November 1819) and Theal’s London embarkation list he was Alfred King in the care of his brother Henry aged 18. Henry was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth King of Cam. Joseph was the brother of Elisha King, the father of the Settlers Joseph, Philip and Henry. Henry Jnr was therefore their 1st cousin. Henry was Joseph’s only child from 2 marriages. He was not Alfred “King’s” brother.
6. At disembarkation in Algoa Bay, he had become the younger brother of Edward King. Edward King and his sister Sarah were the 2 youngest children of a family of five of Daniel and Hester King of Painswick. Although the surname was the same the family was not related to the family at Cam. Edward was not Alfred King’s brother.
7. After disembarkation this Alfred King disappeared and a child called Alfred Brent, whose details of baptism no-one has been able to trace, appeared in the Brent household.
