Notes |
- Cliff Jones (email : CLIFFTOP at xtra.co.nz) email to Tessa King dated 8/10/2002:
I have a Dorcas Lydia King believed born May 1835 in Grahamstown and died June 12, 1889 at Fort Brown, Frontier district. She married James Rackliffe Harding who was christened April 03, 1831 Hankerton, Wiltshire, England and died April 16, 1905 at Fort Brown. There is some conflict as to who Dorcas Lydia Kings parents were, I believe they were a George King and wife Mary?, but I do not know which family of King they were in, one having come from Wiltshire with the Hyman 1820 settler party aboard the Weymouth boarding at Portsmouth. (John King, wife Eleanor and 2 children).
To indicate how much difficulties my HARDINGS present me with, James Rackliffe's parents were James Harding and Johanna and this James died January 03, 1886 at Weenan, and burried Estcourt, Natal. My grandfather had a brother named James Harding born 29/7/1882 in Cape Town then mysteriously disapeared off the face of documental earth and no death notice ever found on NAAIRS or anywhere else. I am not the only Harding researcher to bemoan the seemingly uninspiring christian names most Hardings seem to use.
Further Email dated 2/11/2002 from Cliff Jones:
My interest stems from my Harding research where a line of Hardings emigrated from north Wiltshire with the ship Collingwood in 1850 one branch settling at Fort Brown in the Frontier district. This particular family was headed by James Rackliffe HARDING born Bristol, in March 1831 his wife being Dorcas Lydia King born May 1835 Grahamstown, Eastern Cape. Amongst 3 sons and 3 daughters was a daughter, Lucy Matilda HARDING b. June 26, 1875. She married William Thornton WILDE abt. late 1890's to 1900 it is not known where but they had a son Ernest Hamilton WILDE believed born 1901.
