Denbighshire Free Press 21 August 1886 http://newspapers.library.wales/view/3767834/3767837/18/pattison%20AND%20africa -GWERSYLLT - A grand bazaar and sales of work was held in Gwersyllt schools on Tuesday and Wednesday. The object of the bazaar is to raise funds to build a Kaffir church at Peddie, South Africa, at which place the Rev J PATTISON, of Gwersyllt, is a missionary. The bazaar was composed chiefly of fancy linen and woollen goods. There were serveral interesting sketches hung upon the wall. The Ven. Archdeacon Smart opened the bazaar, and in doing so said he was there to perform a very easy and a pleasant duty, it was to impress upon them to buy the things which they could see beofre them. He was sure they would have great difficulty in keeping their money in their pockets. He told them several stories as to the missionary work, how it had increased in so many places. He would not detain them as he knew they were anxious to buy the beautiful things which were laid out on the stalls. On Wednesday the bazaar was continued. In the evening Professor Bloquehed, FURS. delivered a very interesting lecture on hedicution. Mr P Infinder conducted his wonderful thought reading-reading seance. The blind beggars was also performed. We are pleased to say that the bazaar was a success.
The Magazine for the Rural Deaneries of Ellesmere and Bangor-Iscoyd 1886 - Hanmer-cum-Tallarn - https://fdet.wrexham-history.com/hanmer-cum-tallarn-1886/ - March 1886. On Ephiphany vi. the Rev Joseph Pattison of Peddie, South African gave interesting accounts of his work among the Kaffirs, preaching and speaking twice at Hamner and Tallarn. He noticed more than once the similarity between his present position and that of British or Saxon Missions in Maelor, centuries ago - a mixed community, some Christians, some Heathen; using weapons, and similar mode of warfare that the Kaffirs do now; innumerable camps or strong positions which they used to best advantage; names and sites and traces of churches, showing how frequently they were destroyed and rebuilt in the ceaseless wars. At Hanmer School £1 9s 5d, and at Tallarn, 8s were collected and give to him for his own mission.
Tallarn – On Sunday, February 14th, sermons were preached on behalf of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts; the evening preacher being Rev J Pattison of Graham’s Town, South African; and Tuesday evening a Missionary Meeting was held in the School-room, when the same Missionary gave an interesting account of his work and travels in South Africa.
