Notes |
- James was born after his father died in September 1859. During the South African War. James enlisted as a trooper with the Dordrecht District Volunteer Guard and was killed in action on 2 June 1901. He is buried at Jamestown, where a white marble obelisk still stands, erected by the officers and noncommissioned officers of his unit, to the memory of those who fell in this engagement.
James was said to have been fond of quoting the words “Let me like a soldier fall”. The printed words of a song with this title, wctc found on his person after his death. Before volunteering for service, he was a speculator in Cala. James was survived by his wife, and three young daughters. [1]
