Notes |
- Dorothea Rowse writes:
On Smith’s List (November 1819) and the embarkation list (Theal) she was aged 17 and in the care of her brother Edward.
Sarah was 24 when she joined the Party, in the care of her brother who was actually younger than she was; her age on the emigration lists was stated to be 17, presumably to save on the deposit for an adult. Given that her brother Edward, when given a discharge from Bradshaw’s Party (no. 3938, dated 12.2.1823), was described as 5ft 4ins tall, brown hair, light blue eyes, fair complexion, she may well have been very short indeed and looked younger than her age.
The disembarkation list (Nash) includes her. After that she disappears.
Sarah would presumably have lived on her brother’s location – there is no mention of her in relation to his abandonment of it. She does not appear in the marriage or burial records for the mainline churches and is unlikely to have ventured away to another town without male support.
Her marriage to Thurston Whittle seen in a number of pedigrees is wrong. Whittle married Sarah Hunt, the daughter of William and Mary Hunt of Calton’s Party on about 6.9.1822. Thurston was buried on 31.12.1828. His widow Sarah Whittle them married Philip King of Bradshaw’s Party in St Johns, Bathurst, 29.11.1829; she was buried 1.6.1841 at Clumber Methodist church.
There seems to be a possibility that she did not embark and that the person masquerading under her name was someone else, identity unknown, possibly another female member of a family already registered to emigrate.
There is a possibility that she is the Sarah King who married Meshach Bendall in Cam on 7 November 1820 by banns.
