Notes |
- Lower Albany Chronicle part 2 page 73 31 December there is a piece:
"Major William Cox, 75th Regiment with Cape Mounted Riflemen, had been engaged on th Kariega River. A party of 25 from Grahamstown under Sergeant Pieter Low, with Philip Whitaker and John Brown, was guided by the latter to occupy Clay Pits Post".
2 pages later, on 14th Jan 1835: " at Clay Pits Post, John Brown and Philip Whitaker went out of The Post to parley with a party of Xhosas who approached. Both were killed near the Coombs River. Sergeant Pieter Low continued to maintain the position against repeated attacks, until Ensign Lowen came to his assistance."
