Notes |
- Harry worked on a Smith's Mine. Ptt found this on the web:
http://www.mindat.org/loc-56311.html
Frank Smith Mine, Windsorton, Francis Baard District, Northern Cape Province, South Africa.
A small diamond mine, currently owned by Good Hope Diamonds Pty Ltd. The deposit consists of older kimberlite dykes that are intruded by two younger kimberlite pipes. It is not known when it was discovered, but the company formed to mine it was constituted in 1900. While the diamonds are of excellent quality, the diamond grade is very low. Therefore, the mine was only worked sporadically; it remained closed in the periods 1907-1913, 1914-1920 and 1929-1964. It was worked for some time during the 1990s and is presently still kept under maintenance.
The mine is also well known for its mantle xenoliths, including eclogite, kyanite eclogite, corundum-diamond eclogite, dunite, harzburgite, lherzolite, and garnet harzburgite.
