Notes |
- FW won many agricultural prizes at Queenstown show. Cecil was to inherit Hopevale, and Doris Willow-walk. FW remarried and became spendthrift; he mortgaged the properties to take his new wife on a cruise to England. He later transferred all debts/bonds from WillowWalk to Hopevale, and sold Willowwalk, using the funds to acquire a house at 14 Vincent Place, East London (Cape) which Doris later inherited. Hopevale- bound heavily with mortgage- was passed on to Cecil.
Fred was known for his mean-ness and his simmering temper. The natives called him "SaHasha" which refers to an ember, meaning "still burning" or "smouldering" in cognaisance of his tenacious temper and enduring grudges.
Doris put her cattle onto Fathers farm Hopevale for fattening/agistment. The story goes that when they were fat, Fat Fred sold the fat cattle and gave Daughter Doris back some scrawny beasts at the end of the drought.
Instead of bequeathing Willow Walk to Doris,(as it had been bequeathed to him), he felt that Doris already had an 'estate' by virtue of her marriage to Maurice and his inheritance of KlipKraal.
Thus Fred transfered the Mortgage burden from Willow Walk to Hopevale (leaving WW unencumbered, and HV severely over capitalised) and sold WilloWalk to Tony Bryant- hence WW now named Bryanston-... Tony married one of Jack King's daughters... Fred & Jack King often were disputing neighbours esp. after Fred shot Jack's pig for straying onto WW)
~~ the above from Grant Berry.

Their children inherited the farms Hope Vale and Willow Walk
