- The death occurred at Krugersdorp on Sunday afternoon of Mr, Charles J. Whitfield , brother of Mrs. H.J. O'Neill and Mr. D.R. Whitfield, of this town. The Jate Mr. Whitfield , who had been laid up for only two days, passed peacefully away while sleeping. Born on Oct, 3rd, 1854. a£ Fort White, In the district of Bathurst, C.P., Oom Charlie" (as he was familiarly known to a large circle of friends in these parts) trekked with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs, W H L Whitfield, to the newlv discovered diamond f i e l d s , arriving at New Rush — afterwards Kimberley — on New Year's Day of 1870. After two years of diamond digging, the family moved northwards, and farming occupied their activities, first at Loopspruit, Potohefstroom district , and later In the Kroonstad district . Mr. C. Whitfield subsequently farmed at Kareepan, Wolmaransstad, and on the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War he made for Mafeking, where he shared the lot of the British residents during the period of the siege, and afterwards saw service with the British forces. Following the war, he made his home in Klerksdorp until a few years ago, when he and his familv moved to Krugersdorp. In his day he was a splendid rifle shot, and some fine records are to his credit as a member of the old Keerksdorp Rifle Club. He was married in 1883 to Miss Fancutt, and Is survived by her and two daughters (Miss Winnie Whitfield and Mrs. N. Johnson) and three sons — Walter, Cawood, and Albert.
The funeral took place at Krugersdorp on Tuesday afternoon, being conducted by the Rev. J.W. Nitson, of the Methodist Church. Mr. D.R. Whitfield and Mrs. O'Keill motored up from Klerksdorp to be present.
