Sir,

Having for the last six months been unable to find sufficient employment to keep me from a workhouse, I naturally turn my attention to a plan which His Majesty’s Government have proposed for a number of individuals in a similar situation to myself. I have a good general knowledge of agriculture having been brought up in the country but for the last ten years have been used to Business in the City of London. It would be doing me a favour by informing me in which manner I am likely to be approved to go out to the Cape of Good Hope. Explanation and your information will much oblige

Your humble servant

J.B. CROWTHER
