Sir,

Having been employed for twelve years by the Honourable Board of Ordnance & being now out of employment I shall be much obliged if you will inform me what encouragements are offered to persons wishing to emigrate with their families to the Cape of Good Hope & whether His Majesty’s Government are in want of a person for that Colony who understands surveying in all its branches & who can have good testimonials from his late superintendent, Colonel MUDGE, the governor of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich.

Your most obedient humble servant
